Climb every mountain

23/10/2017
The highlight of Year 10 Geography had finally arrived: our field trip up Mt Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains followed by a guided tour of Mary Cairncross Reserve, Maleny. The weather gods smiled upon us too: beautiful clear skies and none too hot … thank goodness!

First on the itinerary was the arduous climb to the top of Ngungun. I’ll be honest and say that I really expected some students not to make it. I’d even brought along photos of the views at the top so students didn’t feel left out.  How wrong I was. 100% success! Huge ‘shout out’ to everyone. Mind you, the rewards were spectacular and the 360 degree vistas of surrounding peaks were truly world class.

After completing our field work, we then made the much quicker (and easier) trek back down to the awaiting bus for the second part of the day - Mary Cairncross.

At Mary Cairncross, things were a bit more independent. In groups, students collected information about the values of this special place, problems it faces and possible solutions. They admired (and sketched) the amazing Glasshouse Mountains landscape from a different angle, took notes and photos from the new information centre, and listened to our guides as walked deep into the rainforest. Lunch was also part of this mix and many students took advantage of the new café … the milkshakes were excellent I’ve been told!

All in all it was a very successful day and thanks to all for making it so. In particular, thank you to staff members Ms Turnbull and Ms Haynes for their help; Deanne & Iain who were our hugely informative volunteer tour guides at Mary Cairncross; and to our bus driver for safely getting us there and back. Most of all, thank you to all students who were involved on our Field Trip: I couldn’t have asked for a better group.
