Lions Youth of the Year

Year 12 students, Shazura Lawrence and Isaac Lee represented Caboolture High, their parents and community competing against two students from St. Columban’s College in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition on Wednesday, 11 February.  The competition comprised of students preparing a folio, a half hour interview, a prepared five minute speech and two unprepared two minute speeches answering questions based on current affairs and events.   The topics for the unprepared speeches (where the students were given less than 30 seconds to prepare a response) looked at the role of ANZAC Day in modern multicultural Australia, as well as examining the media treatment of the Coal Seam Gas industry – topics that would certainly challenge most socially aware adults.  Shazura won both the Public Speaking and overall competition, gaining the honour of representing the Morayfield District at the Regional Finals of the National Lions Youth of the Year competition.  Isaac was highly commended and placed second overall; an incredible effort for a young man participating in his first public speaking event.

Later in the year, there is an opportunity for all students to join Shazura and Isaac in participating in the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking Competition.  Please see Mrs Hooper in FS1 if you are interested.

Congratulations Shazura and Isaac, on being fine ambassadors for our school and best of luck to Shazura in the Regional Finals.
