Relay for Life: Our Commitment to Community

14/09/2015
The first Saturday in September saw a small but wonderful group of students and staff gather out at Kilcoy for the Cancer Council Fundraiser: Relay for Life.  In essence, teams raise money before and during the event to aid the Cancer Council in providing vital necessities for people fighting for their lives against this terrible disease.  The afternoon kicked off with the opening ceremony and the first lap was led by survivors and carers before everyone else joined in. At 7pm, we remembered those we have lost in a very moving Candle Ceremony before continuing to lap throughout the (very cold) night. Other activities included cricket and footy, led by our students, and Mrs Hooper gave us a great rendition of “These Boots Are Made for Walking” on the microphone when the band was playing, showing off her vocal talents.

Caboolture State High School fielded two teams in the inaugural Somerset event which included the following Year 12 students: Matthew Chambers, Isaac Lee, Jetta Ferguson-Male, Jypsy Browne, Kyle Parker, Brittney Reibelt, Bianca Robinson, Tom Duncan, Jade Bastian, Rachel McCaskill, Clare Chaplin, Jessica Lloyd, Jasmine Wooldridge, Veronica Lees, Tayla Grant, Jacinta McCarthy, Courtney Rutherford, Curtis Northcott, Lewis Haslop and Nic Brien. All of these students need to be commended, not only for their participation during their toughest year at school, but also for behaviour at the event. They brought a sense of fun and heaps of energy earning many compliments from community members and organisers of the event.

We also had a number of staff supporting our efforts and thanks go to Kristy Paskin (fellow team captain extraordinaire!), Jade Pinney, Linda Hooper, Jane Heath, Ian Boxall, Stephanie Hall and Kathy Kerr for their laps and supervision of the students; and also to Dianna Mellino for providing salads for dinner, Joy Corry for her dessert slices, Frank Heath for doing laps when we were all exhausted, Janette for emergency provisions and associated partners for assistance with set up and laps.

A big thank you must also go to all the people who donated to our teams – our total figure has not quite been finalised but we have banked $1875 so far with another $600 to come.  As a result, we were named as the Overall Highest Fundraising School for this year’s event.
