IT for LearnIT

This subject is offered to LearnIT students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The benefits of studying IT for LearnIT

Students who are successful in this subject will have the opportunity to go on to achieve their Certificate ll in Information, Digital Media and Technology at the end of Year 10.  The course is structured to support other LearnIT subjects and students will learn many information and communication technology (ICT) skills that will prove beneficial across all subjects.  As confident users of programs in the Office and Adobe suites they will have many choices for how to go about tasks and make design choices.  System maintenance routines will help establish good ICT habits while day to day management of their laptop will help develop skills to do with problem solving and independence.  Many of the skills learnt in this subject will be used beyond the course itself.

Course content

Year 8

  • Getting to know your computer- Word applications
  • System maintenance- managing and maintaining a computer
  • Screen It competition- video editing in Adobe Premiere Pro
  • A picture goes a thousand ways- image manipulation in Adobe Fireworks
  • Website production – Adobe Dreamweaver

Year 9

  • System maintenance
  • Digital photography- creating digital portfolios
  • Here’s to good health-  occupational health and safety in the workplace
  • Excel and Access- working with Office 2010 programs
  • Screen It – making games with Gamemaker
  • Mind your own business- document folios and business website with embedded video
  • Very flash- taking Adobe Flash further
  • The hard stuff- computer hardware

Extracurricular activities

LearnIT students have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities throughout the year.  These vary from year to year but may include such things as:
  • Screen It- a national competition run by ACMI (Australian Centre of the Moving Image) in which students enter videos and Flash animated games
  • YICTE- Young ICT Explorers run by University of Queensland where students enter ICT projects of their choice
  • UNSW Computer competition
  • Doodle for Google- students use Photoshop to create doodles for selection for use on  Google’s home page
  • Workshops run by external trainers- such as Adobe Indesign (Envisage Training) and animation (QUT)

Pathways and prerequisites

LearnIT students must choose this subject if they wish to achieve the Certificate ll in Information, Digital Media and Technology in year 10.  If successful in completing the Certificate ll, they can then elect to study Certificate lll in Information, Digital Media and Technology in years 11 and 12.
