Excellence in exercise and sport science research

David Bishop attended Caboolture State High School from 1982 to 1986.  He excelled both academically and on the sporting field, particularly in athletics and tennis.  In 1986, he achieved four subject awards and was named Dux of the school.

David was awarded a Bachelor Degree with Honours in Human Movement Studies from the University of Queensland, completing his doctorate in the field of Sport Science there as well.  He began his career at the West Australian Institute of Sport, before becoming a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia.

In the three years prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he worked with Australian hockey, water polo, netball, beach volleyball and kayak teams.   In 2010, after four years in Italy as an Associate Professor at the University of Verona, David was appointed as the inaugural Research Leader (Sport) at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living {ISEAL}, now known as the Institute for Health & Sport, at Victoria University in Melbourne.

Professor David Bishop describes himself as an exercise scientist with extensive experience in both applied sport science support to athletes and teams and cutting-edge research. He is also passionate about the concept of “exercise as medicine” and hopes his research will help to “train” the general public so that they will lead longer, healthier lives. He has been Past President and a Director of Exercise and Sports Science Australia [ESSA], has co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, and regularly gives presentations at conferences around the world.  As well as his work at Victoria University, he is a visiting Professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil, and Adjunct Professor at the School of Medical and Health Sciences, at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.
