Excellence in photography
Darren Jew, an award
winning photographer of underwater, wildlife and landscape with a passion for the ocean, attended
Caboolture SHS from 1979 until 1981.
He graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 1983 with an Associate
Diploma of Art (Applied Photography). Darren worked in commercial
photography before taking up a position as photographer with the Queensland
National Parks and Wildlife Service in 1986, for a period of 8 years, after
which he focussed on building his freelance nature photography career. He
has also been the Managing Editor of WWF’s Living Planet Magazine
(2000-2001), a seasonal whale swimming photo tour guide in Tonga since 2001 and
the owner of Living Image Fine Art Printing (1994 to the present).
Having been inspired to explore a career in nature
photography by his father’s travels in Antarctica, Darren has had the
opportunity to photograph extensively across Australia and the The
Pacific, in Africa, North and South America, the Arctic and Antarctica,
and on the Indian sub-continent and has introduced many people to the
world’s great wildlife, landscape and marine destinations, through small group
photography tours.
A certified SCUBA diver since age 14, Darren’s love for the
ocean is expressed through his award-winning underwater images. His work
is published widely in books and magazines and is used extensively by
conservation groups around the world. He has starred in the television
documentary series ‘Tales by Light’ focusing on a select number of the
world’s best photographers and is a five time winner of the Canon/AIPP
Australian Science, Environment and Nature Photographer of the Year as well as
being named as a Canon Master Photographer.
